Update of the unit
"The Queensland Nurses and Midwives' Union (QNMU) supports the update of this unit. However, we suggest careful consideration be given to the section that covers “other factors that impact the provision of individualised care … including … Lifestyle, cultural and gender identity”. These terms and the content that would be subsequently taught, appear restrictive, exclusive and insensitive. The use of the word ‘lifestyle’ is particularly diminishing given its outdated association to homosexuality being a ‘lifestyle choice’. We advocate for the use of more inclusive terms and content taught in this section of the unit such as cultural safety, culturally and linguistically diverse communities (CALD) and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, gender diverse, intersex, queer, asexual and questioning and other sexuality, gender and bodily diverse people (LGBTIQA+) communities.
