"I think there is a case to have an asbestos awareness elective included here. Asbestos awareness is a compulsory requirement for all staff who do asbestos related work or are likely to encounter asbestos in the course of their work. An example of work where council staff may encounter asbestos (excluding asbestos removal work) are waste workers, rangers, public place cleaners, building compliance, building maintenance, sewer and water, and environmental health to name a few. Examples of units that could be used for or modified to suit a local government qualification are as follows: • https://training.gov.au/Training/Details/10314NAT • https://training.gov.au/training/details/10559NAT • https://training.gov.au/Training/Details/CPCCPD3031A I have just completed an asbestos awareness survey of councils that reports wide spread support for this. I also have support from the regulator SafeWork NSW, the EPA and the Asbestos Safety and Coordination Agency (Cmwth) to make this more available to councils, and to help develop and review course content. Having this as part of the local government qualifications is a great way to raise asbestos awareness and ensure council staff have the skills required for their workplaces. "
