A Case for Change was submitted by the Public Sector IRC in November 2021. It identified the key changes that have occurred in recent years in terms of the operating environment and workforce demand for VET sector training that have resulted in rendering the current Training Package Products unfit for purpose and presented a compelling need for an update.

The Draft 1 consultation period will seek feedback on four Qualifications, 45 Units of Competency and two newly developed skill sets, as updated or developed by the Translating and Interpreting TAC.

Consultation Activities and Timelines

National consultation on Draft 1 will take place from Monday, 28 March and close at 5.00pm AEDT Tuesday, 26 April 2022. During this period input will be sought on the four updated draft qualifications, 45 updated draft Units of Competency and their associated Assessment Requirements and two newly developed Skill Sets.

For more information and background on this project, please download the Consultation Guide, available at the bottom of this page. This Guide should be read in conjunction with the Draft 1 Training Package Products.

During this time SkillsIQ will be meeting with industry stakeholders, employers and subject matter experts (SMEs). If you have expertise in these areas and would like to meet via zoom with SkillsIQ, please contact Devika Mudaliar via devika.mudaliar@skillsiq.com.au or via phone at 0438 043 186.

Following the close of the consultation period, feedback received will be collated and evaluated. This feedback will inform the development of Draft 2 which will be made publicly available for validation prior to the submission for endorsement.

"From the latest edition of the national judicial standards, just launched today (26/4/22): 26.2 Legal practitioners should not require interpreters to sight translate during the course of a hearing without prior notice (“sight unseen”) long, complex or technical documents. Sight unseen translation by interpreters of even simple or short documents should be avoided as far as possible."

"I agree with Heather and Ya-Ping. Requiring NAATI certification or completion of the units in the skillset as an entry requirement is totally inapproppriate. The curriculum should include ACSF levels for entry and screening tests should cover any knowledge requirements that are pre-requisites including ethics. "

"I agree. There should be no requirement for the completion of 6 units for entry. However, there should be entry-level requirements for language proficiency and ACSF mapping of units of competency."
