The key driver for the current review of Fitness Training Package Products is industry concern that existing Units of Competency and Qualifications do not align well to Fitness and Aquatic Fitness instruction roles in the workplace.

Draft 1 Qualifications, Skill Sets and Units of Competency have been updated to align to contemporary industry job roles; provide sufficient flexibility to support multi-skilled instructors; reflect current industry practice and trends and encourage the learner to complete the qualification. The proposed qualifications include:

  • SIS3XX21 Certificate III in Fitness
  • SIS4XX21 Certificate IV in Fitness.

Consultation Activities and Timelines

Consultation on Draft 1 started on Wednesday, 16 September 2020 and will close at 5.00pm on Friday, 16 October 2020.

The Draft 1 consultation period will seek feedback on 2 qualifications, 2 skill sets and 20 Units of Competency.

A Consultation Guide summarising the proposed changes is included in the material and can be downloaded at the bottom of this page.

SkillsIQ will also be undertaking a number of activities to engage industry stakeholders and VET professionals to provide feedback. These activities include a series of general information webinars, subject-focused webinars and stakeholder interviews.

"Element 3 on professional reflection, and Element 4, on evidence-based knowledge and critical thinking processes, are great to see! But does this need to be reflected more in the foundation skills? For example, research skills, or problem-solving/critical thinking skills. Recommendation: foundation skills be updated to reflect the references to evidence-based knowledge and critical thinking processes in the performance criteria. "

"The performance evidence is very specific about the clients and situations students need to be exposed to. This makes it harder to use real clients in these assessments and leads to less authentic assessment conditions when we exclusively rely on role plays. Some more flexibility here would benefit students' learning experience. Recommendation #1: remove, or significantly reduce, the specificity regarding session duration and exercises. Recommendation #2: remove the ability to rely on simulated clients, and stipulate that real clients should be used "

"Where learning styles are mentioned, the key factor in choosing how information is presented is the nature of the information, rather than the preferences of the individual. There is no evidence that presenting information according to a preferred learning style leads to better learning (for example, see Sharp, Bowker & Byrne, 2008; Newton, 2015; Pashler et al., 2009; Coffield et al., 2004). In fact, this can be counterproductive, as the style the information is presented in should be dictated by the information itself. For example, if I provide information about appropriate exercise technique, visual and tactile instruction will be far more effective than merely describing the technique. Similarly, if I am providing background information about why certain choices have been made in an exercise program, by necessity in a session, and without access to textbooks or visual aids, this will be verbal. Recommendation: references to learning styles be deleted. If this is not possible, at the very least it should be made clear that the information dictates the best way to present it, not the preferences of the client. "
