QUALIFICATION TITLE

Certificate III in School Based Education Support

QUALIFICATION DESCRIPTION

This qualification reflects the role of workers who assist teachers and support student learning in a range of classroom settings. They complete general administrative as well as operational tasks to support students with learning under the guidance of a teacher or other educational professional. Work requires use of discretion and judgement within the boundaries of established policies and procedures.

Education support workers work mainly with students in classroom settings in primary and secondary schools, as defined by state and territory legislation.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

There are no entry requirements for this qualification.

Title

"'school based' is a compound adjective and should be 'school-based' (might need to check the fed's style guide -> www.stylemanual.gov.au). Also 'student learning' should technically be "students' learning" as it is a plural (more than 1 student) possessive (students own the learning). Also, TAs do practically no admin tasks these days (in fact they do less than teachers). Research usually shows 3 key areas generically speaking: behaviour management, instructional tasks, and operational support. This applies to both Cert 3 + 4 Finally, they are always and only supervised by a 'registered teacher' -> never an 'educational professional'"

Awkward wording

"This indicates the need for placement in BOTH primary and secondary - i.e. 2x placement, which is untenable and not required. This is obviously a mistake as it was not a suggestion in any previous consultation stages and further below states 'one school'. Please adjust for clarity. Remove word 'complexity' as this isn't terminology used at AQF3 in the AQF i believe - at the next level, students are expected to learn 'technical' information, however cert 3 is 'broad'. Amend above as needed for both Cert 3 and 4. Also suggest reducing compulsory electives to be chosen from list below, from 3 to 2, and also adding 1 or 2 more electives (e.g. course total 17 units - 15 is too low)."

General Comment

"Within a number of units it requires students to have 'student information' and 'interpret' student plans. This may lead to teachers supervising students to be put in a difficult position as they are bound by confidentiality. Perhaps consider 'discuss support strategies' rather than 'student information'. Instead of using 'interpret plans' 'discuss requirements of plan'. In WA the Level 1 JDF states 'assists the teacher in the delivery of planned educations programs.......implements individual or small group programs or demonstrations."

"I agree - maybe at cert 4 and even then only in specific circumstances. At cert 3 TAs are rarely privy to such documents and in fact teachers are very wary of confidentiality as they contain private medical information which they are often instructed to keep private from all staff."
