ACWIC Response

"From the Aged Care Workforce Industry Council in relation to Skill Sets: The Council sees the skill sets as reflecting the skill requirements for workers in the sector, however there are a few skills which are not addressed. The Council notes that Cultural Safety has not been included as a skill set which can be a relevant skill for aged care employees. Cultural Safety will ensure that people from different cultural backgrounds will experience safer care. The Council notes that the use of technology has not been addressed in the skills sets, technology will likely play a larger role in aged care service delivery now and into the future, training will need to reflect this. Other skills which have not been adequately addressed are oral health and dysphagia management. Kind regards,"

ACWIC Response

"From the Aged Care Workforce Industry Council in relation to Skill Sets: The Council sees the new Skill Sets along with the updates to existing Skill Sets as a useful tool to those seeking to develop and broaden their knowledge for specific aged and disability issues. It could also be a tool for aged care employees to specialise in specific areas of aged care and further develop their careers or become the specialised person in their workplace on areas such as Mealtime support or Palliative Approach which require specific skills. The Skills Sets which have been introduced address known deficiency/gaps such as monitoring medication, quality of life and wellbeing, falls prevention, dementia care, recognising mental health, individualised support and palliative care. The gaps which have not been adequately addressed in the Skill Sets are oral health, dysphagia management, cultural safety and the use of technology in aged care. Kind regards, "

where is the oral health unit?

"There needs to be a unit for Oral Health. This is an area of care which has been identified in the Aged Care Royal Commission Recommendations Report. There is minimal reference to oral health in the personal care unit. People have more complex dental work (eg crowns and bridges and implants) and there is a need for staff to understand how to look after the oral cavity. Staff should also know the importance oral health has on general health and well being . An understanding of oral care techniques, equipment and products is integral to oral hygiene""

Aged Care Skill Set

"The Aged Care Skill Set is too long – it comprises 6 units and does not include the Infection control unit. The units that should be included in the Aged Care Skill Set are: CHCAGE013 – Work effectively in aged care CHCCCS031 – Provide Individualised support (which includes personal care) HLTINF001 – Comply with infection prevention and control policies and procedures. CHCCCS033 – Identify and report abuse (a MUST as we now have a Serious Incident Reporting system in aged care) "
