The aim of the proposed updates is to ensure that the Hospital/Health Services Pharmacy Support sector is supported by a highly skilled workforce. Hospital pharmacy assistants and technicians require access to appropriate skills and knowledge in order to meet the current and future needs of the Australian health care system.

To inform the update of the packaging rules of the two Hospital/Health Services Pharmacy Support qualifications; the update of nine existing Hospital Pharmacy Units of Competency; and the development of eleven new Hospital Pharmacy Units of Competency to cover specialist areas, a Hospital/Health Services Pharmacy Support Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) comprised of stakeholders and subject matter experts from across Australia has been formed. Formation of the TAC has informed the identification and validation of the exact nature of the skills needs and knowledge requirements in the industry and the respective Training Package Product update requirements.

To take forward Training Package Product development work, the Hospital/Health Services Pharmacy Support TAC and the Technicians Support Services IRC will subsequently review and confirm the changes required for the development of Draft 2, based on feedback received from the first round of consultation.

Consultation Activities and Timelines

National consultation on Draft 1 will take place from Monday, 24 February and run until 5.00pm on Friday, 03 April 2020. During this period input will be sought on the two updated draft qualifications, nine updated existing Units of Competency, eleven new Units of Competency and their associated Assessment Requirements.

During this time SkillsIQ will be meeting with industry stakeholders, employers and subject matter experts (SMEs). If you have expertise in these areas and would like to meet with SkillsIQ, please contact us via enquiries@skillsiq.com.au or via phone at (02) 9392 8100.

Following the close of the consultation period, feedback received will be collated and evaluated. This feedback will inform the development of Draft 2, which will be made publicly available for validation prior to the submission for endorsement.

"I agree with the comment made by Lorah. Question the wording on hospital pharmacy "supervisors" - in light of upskilling and deputise positions, plus roles that are not entirely supervisory yet still require these elements. "

"(As mentioned previously) Regarding "Pharmacy Board...specialised supply arrangements", these guidelines are now called "Guidelines on dose administration aids and staged supply of dispensed medicines" (as at December 2015)"

"My only concern here is that it seems you can't go straight into the cert IV compounding as you would need to do the 3 group A electives and you would then be unable to do the 3 compounding electives?"
