Certificate III and IV in Hospital Health Services Pharmacy Support Draft 1

Project Summary

SkillsIQ, under the direction of the Technicians Support Services Industry Reference Committee (IRC), is undertaking a project to update the packaging rules of the two Hospital/Health Services Pharmacy Support qualifications – Certificate III in Hospital/Health Services Pharmacy Support and Certificate IV in Hospital/Health Services Pharmacy Support; update nine existing Hospital Pharmacy Units of Competency; and develop eleven new Units of Competency to align to the existing and future job roles of all pharmacy assistants, pharmacy technicians and senior pharmacy technicians.

Please note: The list of Units in the Certificate IV in Hospital/Health Services Pharmacy Support Draft 1 includes HLTCCD003 Use medical terminology in health care as a core Unit. This Unit is currently listed in error under the Group C: Other Electives section. This inaccuracy will be rectified upon completion of the Draft 1 Public Consultation period.

The aim of the proposed updates is to ensure that the Hospital/Health Services Pharmacy Support sector is supported by a highly skilled workforce. Hospital pharmacy assistants and technicians require access to appropriate skills and knowledge in order to meet the current and future needs of the Australian health care system.

To inform the update of the packaging rules of the two Hospital/Health Services Pharmacy Support qualifications; the update of nine existing Hospital Pharmacy Units of Competency; and the development of eleven new Hospital Pharmacy Units of Competency to cover specialist areas, a Hospital/Health Services Pharmacy Support Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) comprised of stakeholders and subject matter experts from across Australia has been formed. Formation of the TAC has informed the identification and validation of the exact nature of the skills needs and knowledge requirements in the industry and the respective Training Package Product update requirements.

To take forward Training Package Product development work, the Hospital/Health Services Pharmacy Support TAC and the Technicians Support Services IRC will subsequently review and confirm the changes required for the development of Draft 2, based on feedback received from the first round of consultation.

Consultation Activities and Timelines

National consultation on Draft 1 will take place from Monday, 24 February and run until 5.00pm on Friday, 17 April 2020. During this period input will be sought on the two updated draft qualifications, nine updated existing Units of Competency, eleven new Units of Competency and their associated Assessment Requirements.

During this time SkillsIQ will be meeting with industry stakeholders, employers and subject matter experts (SMEs). If you have expertise in these areas and would like to meet with SkillsIQ, please contact us via enquiries@skillsiq.com.au or via phone at (02) 9392 8100.

Following the close of the consultation period, feedback received will be collated and evaluated. This feedback will inform the development of Draft 2, which will be made publicly available for validation prior to the submission for endorsement.

"Should malignant disease, immunosuppressive therapy and musculosketal medicines be a single unit? Should MSK medicines be in a separate unit?"

"I agree with the comments about suitability. I am struggling to think of a benefit/reason that the learner would need to know this level of knowledge. If the intent behind the unit is to improve baseline knowledge in general therapeutic areas then I think the level of detail in this unit should be more superficial. Knowledge of cancers at the cellular level is not required. I am dubious if even covering a treatment regimen is required. Cold the focus be on the typical supportive medications used in oncology patients?"

"I agree, most hospital pharmacies would not be involved in DAA's. I would suggest at least 10 pre-packaged item, a combination of original packaging and packing in different containers (where appropriate) and potentially preparing emergency trays?"

"Should have some knowledge content relating to correct packing to protect/assess product if changing container for risk of degradation by oxidation etc if removing medications from blister packs."
