SkillsIQ, under the direction of the Local Government Industry Reference Committee is undertaking a comprehensive update of the qualifications and associated units of competency in LGA04 Local Government Training Package.
Background
This update to Local Government Training Package Products continues the previous consultation work and will incorporate transitioning all Training Package Products to the Standards for Training Packages 2012.
Between 2016 and 2019 considerable scoping and industry engagement activity was undertaken to define the extent and nature of development required to proactively respond to skills development needs in the Australian Local Government sector. There was significant support for a thorough and extensive update. The Draft 1 products developed in consultation will look significantly different to the current versions. The proposed qualifications include:
- LGA30120 Certificate III in Local Government
- LGA40120 Certificate IV in Local Government
- LGA50120 Diploma of Local Government
- LGA30220 Certificate III in Public Infrastructure
- LGA40220 Certificate IV in Public Infrastructure
- LGA50220 Diploma of Public Infrastructure.
Each of the above qualifications have specialisation streams to cover specific specialist areas of Local Government functions.

Project Timings
Draft 1 consultation closed on Friday, 11 October 2019. Following the close of Draft 1 consultation period, feedback received during the consultation period will be collated and provided to the IRC for discussion. It will inform the development of Draft 2, which will be made publicly available for validation prior to the submission for endorsement.
