Sport and Recreation and Aquatic and Community Recreation Training Package Products Update: Case for Change

SkillsIQ, under the direction of the Sport and Recreation Industry Reference Committee, is undertaking a comprehensive update of Sport and Recreation and Aquatic and Community Recreation qualifications included in the SIS Sport, Fitness and Recreation Training Package.

Background

SkillsIQ, under the direction of the Sport and Recreation Industry Reference Committee, is undertaking a comprehensive update of Sport and Recreation and Aquatic and Community Recreation qualifications included in the SIS Sport, Fitness and Recreation Training Package.

The sport and recreation and aquatic and community recreation sub-sectors have changed significantly in the last decade leading to key changes to workforce demand and the operating environment. The training package products are no longer fit for purpose and need to be updated. The main factors which have triggered this request are:

  • Industry and policy reform in the sport and recreation and water safety program environment
  • Changes in health and safety practices and program delivery opportunities due to COVID-19 pandemic
  • Recreation management and aquatic management changes since 2015 including employment frameworks and evolving technologies in plant and equipment
  • Skills shortages and a lack of clear career progression both within the sector and transitioning to other sectors
  • The length of time since the last full review of these qualifications.
  • The number of superseded and deleted core and elective units from both the SIS and other training packages.

The six qualifications included in this case for change are:

    • SIS10115 Certificate I in Sport and Recreation
    • SIS20115 Certificate II in Sport and Recreation
    • SIS30115 Certificate III in Sport and Recreation
    • SIS31015 Certificate III in Aquatics and Community Recreation
    • SIS40115 Certificate IV in Sport and Recreation
    • SIS50115 Diploma of Sport and Recreation Management.
