APPLICATION

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to assist the dentist or dental specialist in carrying out oral health care procedures on patients under relative analgesia.

 

This unit applies to dental assisting work.

 

No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and performance criteria

ELEMENTS

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

Elements describe the essential outcomes

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

  1. Check gas supplies and equipment prior to patient arrival.
    1. Ensure adequate levels of nitrous and oxygen gas supply available.
    2. Check selection of nose piece sizes available.
    3. Prepare patient PPE compatible with RA nosepiece.
    4. Check bag and hoses for damage or deterioration.
    5. Ensure scavenger equipment functioning.
    6. Check pulse oximetry equipment is functional.
  1. Prepare the patient for oral health care procedures during relative analgesia.
    1. Confirm and document arrangements for an escort for patient following the procedure.
    2. Provide an appropriate environment for the patient or carer to ask questions.
    3. Check patient’s ability to breathe through nose.
    4. Make accessible in the clean zone of the surgery the patient’s dental records.
    5. Maintain confidentiality of patient information in accordance with organisation policy and procedures.
    6. Assist with the confirmation of the correct patient, correct site, and correct procedure.
  1. Select and prepare equipment, instruments, materials and medicaments applicable to the oral health care procedures during relative analgesia.
    1. Prepare the equipment, instruments materials and medicaments for the planned procedure.
    2. Arrange instruments for oral health care procedure in order of use in accordance with practitioner requirements.
    3. Give personal protective equipment to patient and members of the dental team.
    4. Follow organisation policy and procedures.
    5. Select and transfer safely the correct dental instruments, equipment, materials and medicaments.
  1. Assist a patient undergoing oral health care procedures during relative analgesia delivery and post procedure recovery.
    1. Follow organisation policy and procedures while assisting in providing pre, during and post-operative oral health care procedures.
    2. Monitor and record patient pulse as required by operator.
    3. Monitor and report patient response and reflexes as required.
    4. Note flow rate, times, level and report as required to the practitioner.
    5. Remain in operatory room during administration of relative analgesia.
    6. Ensure post-operative written instructions are communicated and provided by authorised person to patient, carer or escort.
    7. Assist in the authorised discharge of the patient to the carer or escort.

Assessment Requirements for HLTDEN029 Assist in oral health care procedures during relative analgesia

PERFORMANCE EVIDENCE

Evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit in the context of the job role, and:

  • prepared equipment and assisted in handling and correctly positioning equipment for the practitioner during 3 different oral health care procedures carried out during administration of relative analgesia:
    • consistently applying safe work practices to ensure patient safety during administration of relative analgesia
    • correctly maintaining and storing instruments, equipment, materials and medicaments
  • supported the dental team in the discharge care of 1 patient recovering from an oral health care procedure following relative analgesia.

Demonstrated knowledge required to complete the tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit:

  • basic properties of nitrous oxide and oxygen gases and contraindications management of risks and safe guards associated with relative analgesia including but not limited to:
    • ANZCA PS9 standards

    • International colour code of RA gas cylinders
    • Safe management of patient behavioural changes
    • Unconsciousness
    • Nausea
  • differing standards of equipment and staffing at the locations where procedures are performed
  • basic knowledge of equipment used to administer relative analgesia including anti-hypoxic device, flow rate, scavenger hose, non-return valve and equipment used in monitoring a patient pre- and post-oral health care procedure
  • reasons for keeping accurate records of oral conditions, treatments and the administration of relative analgesia
  • reasons why patients need to follow pre- and post-operative instructions, and the importance of this
  • discharge instructions post-recovery and observation of patient into the care of a responsible person after authorisation from dental practitioner
    • medical emergencies and complications that may arise during and after relative analgesia and appropriate medical response and treatment given by the dental team.

Assessment conditions

ASSESSMENT CONDITIONS

Skills must be demonstrated in dental clinic workplace with the addition of simulations and scenarios where the full range of contexts and situations cannot be provided in the workplace:

 

Assessment must ensure access to:

  • use of suitable facilities, equipment and resources, including:
    • barrier protection materials
    • dental chair and unit
    • functioning relative analgesia delivery equipment
    • oxygen and nitrous oxide gas flow
    • access to defibrillator
    • suctioning and practitioner lighting
    • waste disposal equipment
    • Dental Board of Australia (DBA) and Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) guidelines
  • modelling of industry operating conditions including access to real people for simulations and scenarios in dental assisting work.

 

Assessment must involve demonstration of tasks under the direction of a dental practitioner qualified to use relative analgesia.

 

Assessors must satisfy the Standards for Registered Training Organisations’ requirements for assessors.

 

In addition, assessors must hold a minimum of 5 years clinical experience in dental assisting work.
